CHAPTER XXXVIII

303. An Interjection is a word expressing some emotion (pain, pleasure, anger, surprise, dislike, disgust etc.): Oh! Alas ! An Interjection, like a noun in the vocative case (102), has no grammatical relation with any other word in the sentence. It is, in fact, a sentence in itself. (Oh ! = `I am surprised', or `It is surprising').

304. In Hindi, most of the Interjections are used as independent words. Some, however, are prefixed to a Noun in the vocative case. (See 103):

۽ ܊ܨܛ ! O God!' ܽ ! `Boy!'.

  1. The following are the more important interjections in Hindi:
  1. ܽ ! ! ܽܽ ! ! ơ ! (surprise)

  2. ! ܝܩ ! ܻ ! ܛ ! (applause)

  3. ܡ ! ! ! ܽ ! ܽ ! (sorrow, grief) ! Ŭܽ !

  4. ! ! - ! (joy)

  5. :! ܻ ! ƈܣ ! (disgust-disapproval)

  6. ܡ ! ھ ! (distress.)
  1. Certain nouns, pronouns, adjectives and verbs are also used as interjections:

  2. Noun :- ܟ ! ܟ ! (sympathy or disapproval )

    ܜ ܜ ! (surprise or distress)

    Adjective:- ! (surprise)

    Pronoun:- ơ ! (surprise)

    Verb:- ܥ ے ! (rebuke)

    ܣ ! (distress)

  3. Some of the interjections can be used as nouns:

    ơܽ ܡ-ܡ ܍܇ ܽ ? `why are you kicking up a row ?',
    ܝ ܛ-ܛ ţܽ ܊ܽ `all began shouting bravo'
