203. The Indicative
Future is formed as follows :-
- The root assumes
a modified form by attaching - in the Second and Third
person Singular, - in the First person Singular, -
in the First and Third person Plural, and ܽ in the Second
person Plural.
Thus ܥ is
modified to -
Singular
Plural
| First
Person |
ܥܻ ܥܽ |
| Second
Person |
ܥܽ ܥܽ |
| Third
Person |
ܥܽ ܥܽ |
These are really
Subjective (Optative) forms. See 227.
- To the root
thus modified is appended a -

in Masc. Sg |
| ܽ
in Masc. Plural |
|
in Fem. Sg. or Pl |
204. The Future
Indicative forms of the root ܥ, thus, would be-
- With a Masculine
subject -
Singular
Plural
| First
Person |
ܥܻ ۟ ܥܽܽ |
| Second
Person |
ܻ
ܥܽ ܺ ܥܽܽ |
| Third
Person |
ܥܽ ܽ ܥܽܽ |
(b) With a
Feminine subject -
Singular Plural
| First
Person |
ܥܻ ۟ ܥܽ |
| Second
Person |
ܻ
ܥܽ ܺ ܥܿ |
| Third
Person |
ܥܽ ܽ ܥܽ |
Note:- With the
honorific pronoun ܜ, Third Person Plural forms are used
-
| ܜ
ܥܽܽ (Masc.) |
| ܜ
ܥܽ (Fem.) |
205. (a) Roots
ending in - or - shorten these vowels before attaching
- , - , - and - ܽ [50 - (a) and (b)]. Thus :-
|
`drink' makes |
܇,
܅, ܇ܽ, ܂ܽܽ, |
|
`live' makes |
܇,
܅, ܇ܽ, ܂ܽܽ, |
|
`touch' makes |
,
, ܽ, ܽܽ. |
(b) The roots
ڽ `give' and ܽ `take' drop their vowel (-) before attaching
- , - , - and - ܽ.
| ڽ makes |
ڽ,
ڻ, ڽܽ, ܽܽ, |
| ܽ
makes |
ܽ,
ܻ, ܽܽ, ܽܽ. |
(c)The root ܽ
`be' does not attach - or - . But (First person Sg.)
and - ܽ (Second Person Pl.) are attached as usual. In the
First and Third person Plural, ܽ is nasalized. The forms
are ܽ (II and III Sg.), ܽܽ (I and III Pl.) ܽ
(I Sg.) and ܽܽܽ (II Pl.)
(d) It is common
to write ܡ܊, ܡ܊ or ܨܽ, ܨܽ for ܇,
܇ (he will come, he wil go); ܡܽ, ܡܽ etc.,
for ܇, ܇ etc.; ܡܽ, ܨܽܽ for ܇ܗ
܇ܽ etc; ܡܽ, ܡܽ for ܇ܽ, ܇ܽ
etc. But the regular, and therefore preferable, forms are
those with- and- (܇, ܇ܽ etc.). ܽܽ, (for
ܽ), ܽܽܽ (for ܽܽ), ۻ (for ܽ) and
ܽܽ (for ܽܽܽ) are dialectical or colloquial and should
be discarded.
(e) In Fem. Plural,
- should never be nasalized. ܇ is the correct form,
not ܇.
(f) With the honorific
Pronoun ܜ, Third Person plural forms are used ܜ ܇ܽ
(Masc.) ܜ ܇ (Fem.). An extra-polite form is obta
ned by appending - to the honorific forms of the Imperative,
܃ etc. (180-b). Thus ܜ ܃, ܹ܇ etc. This
form is used for boththe genders.
206. In the Active
Voice, the Indicative Future has onlythe subjectival construction
: the Verb always agrees with the subject in Number, Gender
and Person.
For Passive and
Impersonal forms of Future, see Chapter XIV.
For Progressive
Future, see 262.
